We are so lucky in Crail not just to have an abundance of wildlife and wildfowl but also to have someone really knowledgeable to write about them. Will Cresswell writes an aritcle in the Crail Newsletter weekly about the goings on of the local and tourist birds of the area. Will is a professor of Biology at the nearby St Andrew's university.

So if you are planning on a stay at our holiday cottage in Crail, Fife then don't forget your binoculars!

All of Will's articles are archived on the about crail website in the Wild Crail section and are a wealth of information on our feathered friends and their antics in and around Crail.

The holiday is booked, everyone is excited, let us help with the packing!

Self Catering holidays offer you the freedom to plan your own day and meal times especially if you are holidaying with the children, you can eat out if you want or if the littles have been on the go all day you can come back for a cuppa and feed them something you know they'll eat!

The challenge with self catering holidays is to find a balance between using the local shops for essentails you could have brought from home and packing so much you can't even see the kids in the car!

We like to help by providing the bulkier essentials for travelling with the kids, so you'll find a travel cot, high chair, stair gate and some plastic plates and cups, we also have black out material that goes over the shutters in the Cloud room.

We're really lucky in Crail to have amazing local shops from the Coop to the butcher, wholefoods shop, greengrocer with fish counter and fantastic wine selection as well as an artisan bakery.

We like to provide a few things to get you started like some tea bags, coffee and milk, a few toilet rolls and a kitchen roll. We also provide a basic cleaning kit with dishwashing liquid, cloth, sponge and spray.

However here is our essential list

- More kitchen roll

-Your own favourite brand of tea and coffee

-Condiments, jam, honey, tomato ketchup

-Cooking Oil Spray, this is a top tip, not only does it take up less space, it also won't leak everywhere in the car

Must Haves for the Kids

-Nappies, nappy bags, rash cream, wipes, If you're in this stage you wouldn't go anywhere without them anyway! You will be able to buy nappies locally so you only need to bring enough for the first couple of days

-Milton bucket and tablets for bottles

-travel stroller

-baby carrier for when you want to go off road

-A few favourite toys and also the essential cuddly toy for bedtime

-Beach towels

Packing for Pets

-bed and blanket

-food and water bowl

-Food and treats

-lead (make sure your mobile number is on their tag)

-Poo bags

-wet dog towel

If you are wondering what kit we have and what you should bring, just get in touch, we're here to help!

We have one week left in July available in our fabulous holiday cottage in Crail, only 9 miles from St Andrews. If it's beaches you're after, we have plenty! Like walking, we're on the Fife Costal Path! There are Arts Festivals, putting competitions and a gourmand's delight.

7th-14th July is available again due to a cancellation.

I know most garneners find it difficult to take a week off in June and July but how about a holiday from the weeding and the mowing? Come and stay at our holiday cottage in Fife and be inspired with a Garden tour free from the need to acutally lift a finger yourself.

Whilst our Holiday let in Crail may not have its own garden, we have a sunny bench you can enjoy your cuppa on and plan which garden you are going to visit.

Here's a list, by no means exhaustive but all the gardens on it are less than 15 miles away.

Cambo House, no list of gardens near Crail could be without it! Beautiful woodland walks and unusual plants for sale, the walled garden is said to be one of the finest in Scotland.

Scotlands Garden Open Scheme is a very informative website with all the dates of private gardens who are only open perhaps one or two days a year. Of particular interest is the Fife Garden Trail which runs from late June to early July and consists of 9 privetly woned gardens all different but equally fascinating, 5 of which have never or rarely opened to the public.

Some other gardens within a stones throw of Crail are:

Balcarres House near Colinsburgh

Kellie Castle, Colinsburgh

Hill of Tarvit near Ceres

Earlshall Castle, Leuchars

There are gardens open in Crail and Pittenweem too, see the Scotlands' Garden open scheme website for details.

St Andrew's Botanic garden is a hidden gem if you want to escape from golf for a while!
